Most of the people reading this have been on a social media site. Even if you don’t participate, you’ve probably seen or heard stories about people over sharing on their social media account. This is a big problem these days for companies as well as people. Today we’re going to look at some settings you should have in place to keep your company’s Facebook profile all about business and free of personal clutter.

1. Disallow tagging on photos

Tagging allows people to connect your name with a photo they see or share. This is a tool some spammers use to connect you to images related to their company, including inappropriate content. You should go into your privacy setting and elect to have all tags reviewed before they are allowed, to not allow anybody to see anything you’re tagged in and turn off “tag suggestions.”

Basically, this means that people can’t see anything you’re tagged in and you are asked to allow or not allow any tagging. Additionally, if you have a page, and not a profile, you can set it to allow only admins to tag any images. This will prevent people from connecting your business to inappropriate content or your company’s name from showing up in images that you don’t want to be associated with for any reason.

2. Control your timeline

You can either opt to not allow anybody to write on your timeline or to review items before they appear on your timeline. Either way you need to control the ability people have to write on your wall. The benefits of allowing people write on your wall is that it lets people give you direct feedback or praise. The downfall of this is that unless you control it, people can put very negative or even offensive items directly on your wall.

For many businesses it is best to simply disallow any writing on the timeline. People can still contact you through messages or talk with you with comments on your posts. They cannot, however, put unsolicited good or bad comments up on your page for all to see.

3. Profanity filter and age restrictions

If you have a business page, not a profile, you can turn on the profanity filter. You can set it to low, medium or high and prevent foul language on your page. If you are a family oriented page or one that deals with items centered at parents of children, this is an important feature. Set it to medium or high for the best filtering.

On the other hand, if you’re an adult oriented establishment, you can restrict the audience of your page to those of a certain age. This is a responsible way of controlling your content and will be much appreciated by your community. These controls help you connect with the right people without offending the community as a whole.

And of course, it is important to set up guidelines for all social media use. Everybody that has access to your business page need to have a clear understanding of what can and cannot go on your page. Keep it relevant to business and professional. This includes guidelines on how you respond to customers and others you communicate with online.
