Marketing is how you reach your audience and grow your business, so you can’t opt out if you’re trying to reach that next level. This requires time, resources and knowledge, which is where the challenges start. If you’re a small business owner you may think you can’t afford to market, but in reality you can’t afford not to. You’re competitors are always trying to get an edge and if you’re not working to do the same you’ll quickly fall behind.

So where does that leave a business with limited resources that doesn’t think they can afford to market? Here are some of the ways you can make the most of your marketing budget:

1. Focus on things you can do well. There are many things out there that can be used to spread the word about your brand, but unless you have a lot of money to throw toward them all, you need to focus. A smaller budget spread less thin will give you more reach and frequency. Find 3-5 areas to focus on depending on your budget and do them shockingly well.

2. Fully leverage social media on one or two platforms. Social media is free to use, but many companies do the bare minimum on these potentially powerful platforms. If you’re just posting specials and rarely interact, join communities, post events or use “go live” options, you’re missing out.  You can set up groups, interact with communities, leverage hashtags to expand your reach and use all the handy tools provided within the platform.

3. Showcase your knowledge with blogging. Blogs have several benefits for your company, starting with SEO. Having good, quality content on your website helps you get found when people search for the types of things your company does. It also helps show people you’re an expert which builds trust. You don’t have to be an amazing writer, you just have to understand how to share your specialized knowledge. You can, however, use online tools like Grammerly to check your work.

4. Upscale your website. Your website is a 24/7 tool to get attention that tirelessly on your behalf. When you think of it this way, it’s surprising that so many companies pay so little attention to their web presence. You should make sure it looks good, provides a great user experience and is optimized for search engines. You also need to update it from time to time, especially if you’re taking orders or generating calls. People are always a bit wary of sites that look outdated.

Last but not least, know when to get help. A marketing agency uses their relationships, buying power and knowledge to help small budgets be more effective. So instead of spreading your budget too thin, they stretch your budget by giving you more reach for every dollar than you could do on your on.
